No matter what the size, your event matters to us. In fact, it is only because of the actions of dozens of inspired people like you that Chier has been able to provide over $150,000 directly to our mission. So take action, and be a catalyst for change. Here’s what you need to get started:
What You Provide: The venue and the guests
You may want to host an event (big or small) from the ideas below, or just open your home to us, promise to fill it with people who may be interested in supporting Chier, and let us do the rest.
Some Event Ideas Include
- Organize a Screening of the 2006 Sundance Jury Prize Winner “God Grew Tired of Us” as your home, school, church or synagogue. (It is one of the best films about the Lost Boys and their story). Invite a Lost Boy to attend and answer questions and share his experience.
- “Buy a Book” Campaign: Get as many people as you can to “buy a book” for the Chier Foundation, either a smaller book (50-75$) or a larger book ($100-$125). If you’re more ambitious or feel you could give more, you could also do this with “Give a Class” ($350) or “Support a Semester” ($1200).
- Book Club with Meaning: Get your bookclub or a group of friends to read What is the What by Dave Eggers. It is a beautifully written, deeply poetic story of Valentino Deng, one of the Lost Boys, and his journey in America. Several of our Lost Boys have read the book and would make great “guest members” for the evening.
- Get Your School Involved (or your child’s school). Book drives, fundraising, road races, even holiday gift drives. The possibilities are endless.
- Keep it Simple but Powerful: Host a dinner, a BBQ, a brunch or a cocktail party with your friends on behalf of Chier. Have a couple of the Lost Boys and/or a board member come and share their experiences. Guests can leave with a piece of original African jewelry as a thank you.
