Eligibility
To be eligible for a Chier Foundation Grant, applicants must:
- Be a permanent resident of Utah.
- Be considered a “Lost Boy” or “Lost Girl” of Sudan settled in the US as a refugee. The Chier Foundation will consider a "Lost Boy" or "Lost Girl" to be any Sudanese refugee who has made any part of or all of the Lost Boy journey from Southern Sudan to Ethiopia then back through Ethiopia to Kenya.
- Attend a community college, four-year college, technical school or vocational school, or other educational institution or program.
- Submit the completed application and documentation by the deadlines listed.
Application Guidelines
- The Student is to complete and submit grant application by the required deadline date for each semester as listed on the application.
- The Grants committee will review completed applications for review/approval.
- Grant funds will be disbursed upon grant approval.
- For reimbursement of incurred education expenses paid by the student, the grantee is required to submit receipts with a description of the expense.
- For tuition and other related educational expense payment, the Chier Foundation will make payment arrangements directly with the college or other educational institution.
- Grants will not be awarded for educational expenses that have not been approved in advance.
- Grants applications will not be accepted after the stated deadlines. Exceptions will be made a the discretion of the Board of Directors.
Evaluation
At least one grant will be made to each qualified applicant each academic year, and if funds are available additional grants will be considered. The amount of the grant award will be determined by the total amount of monies available versus the total number or eligible grant applicants. Exceptions to this are at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
Grants will be restricted to the financial support for tuition, book expense, college fees, and education equipment (scientific calculators, computers, or other educational materials) approved by the Grants Committee.
Grant Applications will be reviewed by three-member Grant Committee. The Committee Chair shall make arrangements with the Treasurer for payment of the grants and shall keep a record of all grant awards.
